The Friday Forum - August 19 Plus Chantecaille Protect the Lions Eye Palette Live and In Person

Thank God for FedEx! My guy showed up with Chantecaille's Protect the Lions Eye Palette just as I was moving toward my computer to write the Friday Forum.

Look at that beautiful blue sky reflecting in the silver-rimmed case! It puts that exquisite lion in the perfect context of blue sky and Mother Nature.

I featured this palette last week as a coming attraction. Hop over to the link for all the information on Chantecaille's Fall 2016 Collection. At the time I featured it, several of us worried about the description of Amboseli, a glistening shade "inspired by the beautiful, rich burgundy color of the earth in Amboseli National Park." Worry no more! The shade is a gorgeous, rich brown.

I'll name the shades again, starting at top left and moving clockwise. Also, someone asked if there is an overspray on the colors. The answer is yes.
  • Sand, a creamy beige infused with flecks of gold African Topaz;
  • African Topaz, a glistening copper;
  • Rock: a silky, matte, neutral grey; and
  • Amboseli, a glistening shade inspired by the beautiful, rich burgundy color of the earth in Amboseli National Park (this mesmerizing shade enhances all eye colors).
I immediately took swatch photos, using a sponge-tipped applicator, starting at the top of my arm with Sand, and moving down until I ended with Amboseli.

As you can see, Amboseli is not burgundy. It's brown - just as I suspected from its appearance in the compact. All four shades coordinate beautifully - even the grey, which doesn't always look like it belongs with brown tones.

I purchased my Protect the Lions Eye Palette from Chantecaille. It arrived in one day. The palette is also available at Neiman Marcus Mazza Gallerie. Jeannine Barnes is the product specialist there. You can reach her at (202) 966-9700. Just ask for Chantecaille. I have most of the rest of the collection and will be showing it to you over the coming days.

Don't forget that five percent of your purchase will go to Lion Guardians. That's important to me.

It's time for the Friday Forum. The Friday Forum has always been an opportunity to share information. Are you using a fabulous product and want to sing its praises? Tell us about it! Did you find a beauty product disappointing? Tell us why! Do you have questions others might be able to answer? We can help! Want to talk about skin care? I'm game. Just use the comments. We have busy weekends and slow ones on the forum. I hope to see you in the comments.

I love this. I preordered the this collection for BG gift card event. I'm also probably going to pick up some of the EL/Victoria Beckham collection. I also preordered some Cle de Peau for NM beauty event and some BB for Nordstrom Trend. Whew my card is going to get a work out. I don't feel too guilty as I had to go through some scary medical procedures since they found a tumor in my ovary. I just got the good news that its benign and I figured that what better way to celebrate than buy makeup! I'm leaving for London next week and all I could think of was that I would have to cancel my trip. I think I would have been more upset at missing out on my trip than having to have any type of cancer treatment.

Anahita, thank God! How scary!

I'll be ordering from those collections too. Have to get a new job, though.

I keep looking at your photos and thinking, "How many brown shadow palettes do I really need?" Alternating with, "Ooh! This is so pretty, I want it so much." I also want that Tom Ford lipstick you showed us the other day. Need to balance my desire for make up with my desire to take some continuing ed classes.

Protect the Lions is every bit as beautiful as I had hoped. Chantecaille excels at replicating the nuanced colors found in nature and this one's rich and complex colors are definitely evocative of the African plains. As for the grey, when you look at nature, you often see grey and brown in combination and Chantecaille has done an excellent job of creating the perfect grey to go with the other earthy shades in this palette. Protect the Lions is an excellent example of Chantecaille's sophisticated color sense.

I continue to be impressed with Clé de Peau's Liquid Rouge formula and now have four of them :-) They can be applied heavily for a semi-opaque high gloss shine or applied with a lighter hand for a softer shine that lets a bit of your lip color peek through. But no matter how you apply them, the color and glossy finish wears comfortably for a long time before fading out evenly. I also love that they don't dry out my lips, they don't migrate or settle into lines, and the colors remain clear and rich. These are most definitely in the luxury lipstick class in terms of quality---and price! LOL ---but they're well worth it.

Wildfires continue to rage out of control in northern and southern California, flood waters have overtaken parts of Louisiana, a presidential election is running amok, and now we have the ridiculousness of Ryan Lochte and his pals. What a summer! Hopefully, all you other wonderful readers will have beauty news to share that will brighten the landscape:-)

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone.

Eileen,

I guess I'll have to try the CdP liquid lips. I've been trying to be frugal.

Ryan Lochte's lawyer released a sensible statement today. I prefer to believe the incident was a combination of boys behaving badly and Rio security guards exceeding their authority to extort money from the swimmers.

Charlestongirl said...

FYI, I will be publishing no more comments on Ryan Lochte and his fellow swimmers. Too political, and not even close to beauty.

Hi all! Thank you for this post CG... I am really tempted, but just not sure I can pull the copper off? I'm fair with pink undertones and true green eyes. Any suggestions on how I could use it? Maybe as just a highlight color on the center of the lid?

Also, thank you for the Tom Ford Velvet Bloom post. Snapped that up last night from Neiman Marcus. I would also like to get the Burberry Lip Velvet in Damson (permanent but featured for fall I believe) - has anyone tried this formula? I'm somewhat smitten with the color!

Finally, who would like to recommend a light weight but more medium coverage foundation? I'm sorta in the market for a new foundation and could use some thoughts- there are just so so many it's hard to know where to start sometimes. I'm very intrigued by the By Terry Terrybly Densiliss Wrinkle Control or the new Cle de Peau, but I too don't return makeup and I don't know how to figure out the right shade in those lines.

Speaking of By Terry - I purchased the Sun Designer palettes finally and I am obsessed with them!

Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

A bit of confusion has arisen around the Clé de Peau Liquid Rouge because some blogs and shopping sites are referring to them by number whereas others are using names. Sheesh! So, here are the numbers with their names: 11 Lingerie, 12 Chanille, 13 Flushed, 14 Sequin, 15 Fast Lane, 16 Deco, 17 Bugatti Red, and 18 Lempicka Red. Bubbly Michelle has a hand swatch of all the colors with both name and number listed that should clear everything up :-)

I received my Protect the Lions eyeshadow palette today. I love it. I don't know who in the Press Releases comes up with the idea that any of the colors trend RED but the inflections are rose and it's a beautiful Rose gold reflecting bronze and a more interesting rose reflecting medium brown
along with a great matte grey and a pearlescent cool off white. This is not your average palette. This is a chantecaille palette, the only one that I will pay $90 for cause I'm worth it.

Hi Jill,

If you're really interested in Clé de Peau foundations (and they've got several different ones from which to choose), it is worth a trip to the counter to be properly matched by a CdP representative. At $125 a pop, you wouldn't want to be unhappy with the coverage, the finish, or the color. The first time I tried CdP foundations, the CdP lady spent quite a bit of time matching me to the different foundation options. She then sent me home with generous samples of the three I liked the most and told me to take my time playing with them; when I made up my mind, I could call and shed send it out to me. What is interesting is that two of the foundations looked best in O10 and one looked best in O20. So, yes, it's better to go to the counter. If you can't visit the counter, at least call and speak to the CdP SA. The color selection can be confusing to someone who isn't well versed in CdP's system. For example, intensity 20 has four different variations: B20, WB20, O20, and BF20. The letters refer to the undertone. Most SA's understand the higher the number, the darker the shade, but they don't understand how CdP classifies undertones and that is a crucial piece when selecting the perfect shade.

The swatches are beautiful and now I know I need this in my life. Can't wait to see the blush swatch also. Hoping that NM or Saks sends me an offer that might help to offset the high price. For anyone out there who may have very sensitive eyes, have no fear, my eyes are very sensitive and I can always wear Chantecaille with no problems. My everyday eye makeup is always Chantecaille or Sisley.

Ugh! Not Eileen again!! :-P LOL

I forgot to say that pictures of Tom Ford's winter/holiday collection are beginning to surface. It's called Winter Soleil. There are two palettes (4 eyeshadows, 1 blush, and 1 highlighter), a bunch of metallic lipsticks, and an assortment of other products. There's also a Lips & Boys 2016 collection. Like last year, half the colors are veterans and the other half are new shades. You can see some pictures and swatches at ReallyRee.

Eileen, I have all the TF pictures. You've gotta give me time to post them! :)

All the comments about the beautiful Chantecaille eye palette remind me what I love most from Chantecaille and that is their Rose de Mai cream which is actually more of a gel than cream. It's so perfect for a moisturizing layer day and night during the warm and humid days of late spring, summer and early fall, and the rose does seem to calm my sensitive reactive skin. I like to dab a little on top of foundation as well if I feel I'm looking a little too dull. I'm on my second jar and never want to be without it. My warm weather foundation favorite is 3Lab Aqua BB cushion with SPF 40 and a host of skin friendly including (you guessed it) rose water! I'm 60 now, and finding that as I get older, a light coverage foundation over well moisturized skin actually makes my face appear more youthful. CG - I can't thank you enough for coming back with your blog! I know it takes much in terms of precious resources including your time, but I look forward to it each day. Now a quick question about the TF Velvet Orchid lip color - I know that it's a pearlized and probably more opaque formula, but is the shade somewhat comparable to By Terry Hylauronic Sheer Rouge Dare to Bare? I love this color and remember you have it as well. Have a great weekend y'all!

Hi Charleston Girl!! Happiest weekend wishes to you!! I can't wait to get the Chantecaille palette! Thank you for the swatches!! I continue having issues wearing lip color and my chronic dry lips. I'm worse now than in the winter! I've been using Cle de peau's new radiant liquid rouges. But, I'm finding that it looks like the color is breaking up on my lips quickly and feeling sticky, almost rubbery on my lips. This is incredibly disappointing to me and, I'm not sure what to do. I have to take my finger and smooth or pat the color as best as I can. I need to touch up after the half hour mark. At cosmetic counters, I'm told to use a matte liquid lip and put a gloss over it. Does that make sense to you? Does this happen to anyone else? I noticed the new Guerlain eye palettes are available online. Will you or anyone be getting one (or more)? I'm wondering about pigmentation and longevity. xo to you!!

Anonymous 11:41, I also have very sensitive eyes, and I wear Chantecaille shadows with no problems...almost every day!

Charlestongirl said...

Jill, I am fair with pink undertones and blue-green eyes. I think copper looks great on me. Give it a try.

Charlestongirl said...

Gigi, you are definitely worth it! You can never go wrong with Chantecaille.

Charlestongirl said...

Nan, I love that cream, especially in the summer!

Charlestongirl said...

Wendy, try wearing a balm under that lip color. If it still breaks up, I'd return it. It costs too much to keep a product that can't work on you. CdP is expensive. Use the money on something you can wear.

BTW, try the EL Genuine Glow lip moisturizer I featured the other day. It's fab for dry lips.

Eileen said...

Hi Wendy,

If the formula of the CdP isn't agreeing with your lips, send it back or return it to the store. They're too expensive to have to make them work. That's like hammering a square peg in a round hole. As for using a matte formula and putting a gloss over it, matte formulas tend to be the most drying of all and putting a gloss over the top will make it look more emollient, but it doesn't counteract the drying nature of the matte formula which is what you're putting right next to your lips. I also have year round chronically dry lips. When I very occasionally fall in love with a matte color, I have to prep my lips with extra moisturizer and apply a good balm before applying the lip color. Even with all that, I can not wear it more than a day without my lips flaking.

Jill, one more thing. I highly recommend Armani's cream compact foundation. It is available at Sephora.

Charlestongirl said...

One more thing for now. Every time I think about quitting the blog, someone like Nan encourages me to keep writing. I had hoped that my readership numbers would have recovered by now (after my medical break). They haven't. It's discouraging. Please get your friends to read BTiB!

Not Jill, but do you have a link to the Armani Cream Compact foundation? I can't find it anywhere and would love to check it out too.

Oo now that is a lovely palette, well worth the purchase! I found another amazing red lipstick (what other color do I buy really?) today. It's one of the new Makeup Forever Artist Rouge creme in 409. I was a little hesitant because the previous line was pigmented but not so easy to apply, quite stiff actually. This is really lovely, you'd see me a mile away. lol I just need a lip liner to work with it. I guess that's one question I have, what color lip liner to use? Nude, red or one of those "clear" ones?

Hope everyone has a great weekend and I'll definitely spread the word about the blog. I love your posts and am so happy you came back to writing!

I fear I led you astray. It looks like my Armani cream compact has been discontinued.

I love your blog but what I think has happened is that instagram has become much more dominant in the last year. People are using it to promote their blogs or vlogs.

For Jill re Burberry Lip Velvet.
Burberry do beautiful colors however the Velvets have quite a bit of fragrance in them, the one I got had to be uncapped for 3 days before I could tolerate it. Generally the formula gets good reviews but the one I got was half price through an online discounter and I found it drying. I believe the kisses formula is unscented. The latest Kisses have scored some complaints as they don't retract and need a steady hand to put the cap back on.

Hi Charlstone Girl,

Please don't quit blogging. You're blog is one of the best blogs out there, and I would miss your posts. Your posts are so current and whenever I seek a review on a product, you are usually the one who has already reviewed it and has done it thoroughly and sincerely. I also appreciate your writing style and no filter policy for pictures. Please keep writing :)
